audra & matt | engagement | allied arts photography

Audra and Matt are straight up awesome; kind, smart, and tons of fun…so together they are quite the dynamic duo and an absolute pleasure to photograph. Audra said that she loved all things French, so we headed for the European inspired gardens at Allied Arts Guild for their engagement session. Matt brought some french pastries and champagne to share with his love, and Audra brought some rockin’ outfits, and together they brought the romance. We got really lucky and had the gardens to ourselves, making it easy to capture the intimate and real connection between these two, who came all the way from Pittsburg, Pennsylvania for this shoot. After our afternoon together I’m more than positive that their summer wedding at the Cypress Manor Estate in Monte Sereno is going to be filled with pure beauty and fun.

karen & mark | san francisco cliff house wedding

Karen and Mark live in LA but they chose to have their wedding in San Francisco, so they really embraced the whole city theme and stayed at the historic Westin St. Francis and held their wedding at the iconic Cliff House. Karen and Mark are two of the most positive, intelligent (Karen is a Harvard educated and Mark is an educator) and kind people you could ever hope to meet and they definitely brought the sunshine to the city on that fog-filled day. They had an emotional first look at the hotel and then we walked with the family down to the cable cars and stopped at Crissy Field before heading to the Cliff House. Their vows had me in tears, and I love that Karen added a story about a day she spent with Mark when he helped her fix up her backyard. At the end of the day, after Mark had left, she realized that the garden was a metaphor for what Mark had done to her life, he had come in and made it more beautiful. Right after the ceremony we headed down to the beach and then everyone came out onto the balcony and watched the fog miraculously lift right before the sun dipped into the Pacific. That pretty much sums up the whole day; two positive people manifesting a bright and beautiful future together surrounded by their favorite people…and that is everything a wedding should be.

devon & ryan | the clement | monterey wedding

Devon & Ryan chose the new Clement Hotel on Cannery Row as their wedding venue, and it was the absolute perfect choice for bringing their vision of a modern, elegant and crazy fun wedding to life. The surrounding views of the Monterey Bay are stunning, especially when the sun magically appears through the fog and turns the ocean and sky to blue, and the interiors of the hotel are equally beautiful. The ocean and the Clement may have set the tone, but it was the power of the connection between these two, their thoughtful details, and the hard work of the lovely ladies at Coastside Couture that really made this day so amazing. I loved the use of grey silks, white flowers, yellow accents and candles, the ‘eat, drink & be married’  sign that was handmade by the maid of honor, and that they used an Ansel Adams photo book as their guest book….but many of my favorite moments of the day where found on the dance floor. Don’t let all of the elegance fool you, this is a crew who definitely know how to celebrate.

bob & elizheva | engagement session | costanoa coastal lodge

I love an interview with potential clients that evolves into a conversation that lasts for hours. That’s how my very first meeting with Bob and Elizheva went, and immediately I could tell that this was a couple who were very much in love, and very willing to pour their personalities and effort into making their entire wedding experience a positive and meaningful one. Bob is the talented architect behind Fink Architecture, who I have done photography for in the past. I have to admit that while I love to photograph an amazing space, engagement sessions always trump architectural photography because they are filled with so much emotion as a couple enters into a new stage of their relationship. Documenting this couple’s joy felt effortless as we talked, walked and joked along the trails near Costanoa, where they will be getting married later in the summer. As you can tell by the last photo, I’m kinda excited about spending another day with these two!

shell & nelson | santa cruz wedding

A big dose of serendipity caused me to photograph this wedding. My husband has known this great guy named Nelson for years, so we were excited to hear that we were invited to his May Day wedding. Soon after I rsvped that we would be attending, I got a sweet email from a super talented photographer named Melissa Slater who is based in Kansas City (where she recently relocated from Orange County) saying that she had seen my website and blog and wondered if I could be her assistant and second shooter for a May Day wedding in Santa Cruz. I told her that I was actually attending a wedding as a guest that day, and in jest added that it would be crazy if it was the same wedding…well, turns out…it was! Thankfully the awesome bride Shell willingly gave her consent, and that is how I came to work with Melissa and how my husband ended up date-less for this wedding. It was so much fun to work by Melissa’s side, and I loved watching her create such beautiful images. Gabe, sorry for ditching you, but you know I would have brought my camera anyway.

heidi & paul | engagement session | santa cruz photographer

This was one powerful and atmospheric day for a beach engagement session. It was the same day that just up the coast, the waves at Mavericks were breaking records as the biggest in the history of surf contests. We arrived at Natural Bridges in the morning to discover that the beach had been completely swallowed by the ocean, so we explored around like Californian kids enjoying a rare storm, and discovered so many great spots filled with beautiful light. The irony is that these ethereal images capture an incredibly down-to-earth couple. I love these two for being so easy going, for cracking me up with their quick wits, and for being so clearly and comfortably in love. I can’t wait to photograph their spring wedding at Pasatiempo’s Hollins House in Santa Cruz.

printed metal & blue leather | wedding albums | bay area wedding photographer

I am very open minded when it comes to the style of a wedding; vintage, edgy, glam, modern, I love it all, but when it comes to the wedding album, I will admit, I do have some opinions. I don’t like ones that look like they were made in any year of the ’80s, or even the ’90s. I prefer clean, modern looking ones with lay-flat  pages. I love the ones that tell the whole story of a couple’s amazing day in a collage of moments and moods and colors. I want to see an album reflect the couple’s personal sense of style, but most of all I love an album that dares you to put it on the coffee table, and even pass it on to the kids.

After what felt like an endless search, I finally found the perfect album fabricators. They offer 100s of different custom cover options, and allow me to make each album look totally unique. Here are some pages from two that I recently shipped. I love the look and the durability of the printed metal cover, and the leather cover with a photo indent is a timeless classic.
