katrina & robbie | engagement | santa cruz photographer

Katrina and Robbie are both talented visual artists working in the film industry, so I was excited (and slightly intimidated) to get creative with their engagement portraits. I really wanted them to love their images, and I think by just documenting them doing some of the activities they enjoy together, we were able to really capture who they are as a couple. Robbie is from the UK and he loves to have a beer or two at the pub, so we started at the Santa Cruz Mountain Brewery. There’s nothing like a pint to ease the awkwardness of having a camera follow your every move and to help amplify the fun. We then headed over to Wilder Ranch to wander around the old farmstead and do some crossword puzzles in the orchard. We followed the sun to where it set over the coastline and watched the full moon rise into the dusk light. It was one of those atmospheric evenings, one that made me feel so incredibly lucky to get to meet cool people, go to cool places and simply document love for a living.

shell & nelson | santa cruz wedding

A big dose of serendipity caused me to photograph this wedding. My husband has known this great guy named Nelson for years, so we were excited to hear that we were invited to his May Day wedding. Soon after I rsvped that we would be attending, I got a sweet email from a super talented photographer named Melissa Slater who is based in Kansas City (where she recently relocated from Orange County) saying that she had seen my website and blog and wondered if I could be her assistant and second shooter for a May Day wedding in Santa Cruz. I told her that I was actually attending a wedding as a guest that day, and in jest added that it would be crazy if it was the same wedding…well, turns out…it was! Thankfully the awesome bride Shell willingly gave her consent, and that is how I came to work with Melissa and how my husband ended up date-less for this wedding. It was so much fun to work by Melissa’s side, and I loved watching her create such beautiful images. Gabe, sorry for ditching you, but you know I would have brought my camera anyway.

Can this couple please adopt me as part of their extended family? I am in love with them. I think everyone who meets Heidi and Paul falls in love with them too, so it makes perfect sense that they fell in love with each other. It’s equally easy to fall in love with their relaxed world full of wonderful family, friends and humor, and it definitely helps that they are straight up awesome on the dance floor. This is one big fat post, sorry, but it had to be, there were too many moments essential to the telling of their story.

heidi & paul | engagement session | santa cruz photographer

This was one powerful and atmospheric day for a beach engagement session. It was the same day that just up the coast, the waves at Mavericks were breaking records as the biggest in the history of surf contests. We arrived at Natural Bridges in the morning to discover that the beach had been completely swallowed by the ocean, so we explored around like Californian kids enjoying a rare storm, and discovered so many great spots filled with beautiful light. The irony is that these ethereal images capture an incredibly down-to-earth couple. I love these two for being so easy going, for cracking me up with their quick wits, and for being so clearly and comfortably in love. I can’t wait to photograph their spring wedding at Pasatiempo’s Hollins House in Santa Cruz.

erika & ross | santa cruz wedding photographer | Holy Cross church

I can’t think of a better couple for my very first blog post. Erika is one of the sweetest people you’ll ever meet, and both of my kids were lucky enough to experience that sweetness when she was their preschool teacher.  Whenever I’m beyond frustrated and about to lose my cool, I still say to myself, “channel your inner Erika.”  She is so down to earth and takes care of those around her with a graceful ease. Ross is an amazing father with a passion for cars. He possesses a kind heart and a sense of depth beneath his beautifully tattooed exterior. After crushing on Erika in the classroom, he soon realized that she was his soul mate, and while he may be a good couple of feet taller in height, they seem to fit perfectly together. They share a real love for their family and their great friends, they both know how to have a good time, and they definitely know how to rip up a dance floor. I was honored to document their big and beautiful day….and here’s one massive blog post to match.
